Project Overview

The Transmission Gully project involves constructing a 27-km four-lane (two in each direction) motorway from MacKays to Linden. There will be interchanges at MacKays Crossing, SH58, eastern Porirua (James Cook), and at Kenepuru.

The project is part of the Wellington Northern Corridor and is a vital cog in the region’s transport system. It is designed to provide a critical and resilient lifeline to Wellington in the event of an earthquake or other major disruption. Importantly, it is a catalyst for local economic development.

Transmission Gully is the first roading project in New Zealand procured through a Public Private Partnership (PPP) model. Under the PPP model, the NZ Transport Agency has set performance targets for Wellington Gateway Partnership (WGP) on elements such as seismic resilience, incident response, and trip time reliability.

As such, the road design focuses on driver safety and construction of a highway more resilient to seismic activity or damaging weather.
